As you explore downtown Oklahoma City, there are many things that draw the curious eye. From the high rising Devon Tower, the Skydance Bridge and OKC Thunder billboards and street banners – your map pin is instantly marked on where to go and what to see. And you can’t miss the meticulously placed Ferris wheel along Interstate 40 and the Oklahoma River. Let us take you to the Wheeler District – another must-see destination in Oklahoma City.
The birth of Wheeler District is nothing short of unique. In 2006, the former Downtown Airpark was purchased by the City. Developers were on a mission for an iconic piece to serve as a focal point for the area, ultimately winning a bid for the famous Santa Monica Pier Ferris wheel that originated at Pacific Park along California’s Pacific Coast. The Santa Monica Pier Ferris wheel was featured in over 200 commercials and movies, receiving national acclaim as “Best of America” and “World’s Coolest Ferris Wheel.” After the purchase of the Ferris wheel in 2008, it went through rounds of reconstruction and renovation to a careful inspection period where it was deemed safe for installation, operation and recreation. Years after, developmental phases of the area took shape, and a new urban neighborhood was introduced.
The starlight of attraction at the Wheeler District is indeed the Ferris wheel. Kickoff for Opening Day of the Ferris wheel was held Saturday, April 6. General weekly hours of operation are Tuesday-Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets and rates for rides will vary with free admission for children ages 3 and under. As a reminder, the experience would not be complete without a selfie of the giant O-K-C letters!
Events are well and plenty at the Wheeler District. The spring season brings beautiful weather, along with fresh produce, art exhibits and bike outings. For a full list of scheduled events, the district has you covered to make plans today on their webpage.
