Shorts
Shorts, performed in the Civic Center Music Hall, will feature three iconic ballets in one production.
Shorts includes works for every kind of audience member, with acts such as the Afro-Cuban piece, Otra Vez, by Stephanie Martinez; a neoclassical piece titled Divertimento No. 15, composed by George Balanchine; and a world premiere by Oklahoma City Ballet Artistic Director Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye, featuring the music of Oklahoma City’s own The Flaming Lips.
Jolicoeur-Nye’s work will be the first to utilize music by The Flaming Lips for a professional ballet. As a longtime fan of The Flaming Lips, Jolicoeur-Nye noted this performance allows him to revisit his childhood and combine the two things he loved most: rock music and dance. “I want to juxtapose typical ballet stereotypes and rock and roll stereotypes, and hopefully, congeal them in a way that changes how one thinks of OKC Ballet.”
Every set piece, costume, musical work and chorographical piece of The Flaming Lips ballet will be created in Oklahoma City. The production will also be performed by Oklahoma City Ballet’s professional dancers.
